Weekend Magistrates' Court Sittings

(0 votes)

In response to concerns that the overcrowding of prisons in Victoria has resulted in some prisoners not being brought to court, a pilot program has been announced which will involve the Magistrates' Court sitting on weekends. The logic behind it, is that if bail applications can be heard on the weekend, it potentially frees up a spot on the list on the next weekday.

This is a very positive development for a few reasons. Firstly, it will deal with to some degree with the overcrowding issues faced at court. Secondly, it means that individuals arrested on Friday night don't have to spend a weekend in the cells if refused bail by a bail justice. They can apply for bail in the Magistrates' Court on Saturday or Sunday.
